Holy War (1941)

Red Army Chorus. Music: A. V. Aleksandrov. Lyrics: Vasilii Lebedev-Kumach
Description: This song, written one day after the German invasion and rushed onto the air-waves, generated the greatest emotional reaction during the war (music by General Alexander Alexandrov, founder of the Red Army Ensemble; words by Vasily Lebedev-Kumach). The cumulative effect of all the verses was augmented by a melody that ascends and descends majestically in a minor key to a march rhythm in an unusual 3/4 time.
