Outside Prokhorovka (1983)


Description: The Great Fatherland War (WWII) was by the 1970s the primary legitimizing accomplishment of Soviet socialism. The state ensured that it was commemorated and invoked often, most powerfully on Victory Day (May 9 – marking the German surrender). The archival description of this clip is as follows: “On a field outside the village of Prokhorovka. Commemorating the anniversary of the Battle of Kursk. Villagers near the battle site remember the dead on July 12, St. Peter’s Day according to local traditions.”
