Personnel Changes in Georgia

Personnel Changes in Georgia. Summer 1972

Readers of the Zarya vostoka (Dawn of the East) might recognize change coming in the laconic account of party and government job shifts throughout the summer of 1972. They would have noticed the gradual rise of Eduard Shevardnadze in the ranks, and noted with a smile that republic chief Mzhavanadze was forced to observe the plenary proceedings without comment. His name would soon enough disappear entirely from the newspaper.
