Vladimir Motyl: The White Sun of the Desert (1969)

Starring Anatolii Kuznetsov, Spartak Mishulin, Kakhi Kavsadze, Pavel Luspekaev.
Description: On both gender and nationality, Motyl’s film is a wonderful specimen of Soviet irony. When asked about their perceptions of Asia, Russians often cite quotes from the movie. This clip features the encounter of Red Army soldier Sukhov with the harem women of the guerilla leader Abdulla, whom he has been left to guard, and the distance between their ‘Eastern’ attitudes and his revolution.
