The Fall and Rise of a Great Building
Stalin and Kaganovich's campaign to remake Moscow struck first at the Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer, demolished in 1931. Its riverside site was designated for the Palace of the Soviets, to become the world's tallest building. An all-Union competition in 1934 awarded the commission to Boris Iofan; construction began in 1935 but the war ended it.
