Signing the Agreements

Description: On June 21, 1973, Richard Nixon and Leonid Brezhnev sat side by side in Washington to sign two détente-era accords: cooperation on peaceful nuclear energy and “Basic Principles” for further limits on strategic offensive arms. The scene mixed high diplomacy with Brezhnev’s stagecraft. As cameras rolled, he punctuated the moment with comic, stabbing pen motions, inviting laughter and easing tension before returning to signatures and handshakes. It was Cold War ritual, briefly softened by humor.
