Description: During the Soviet retreat to Stalingrad, summer 1942. Lopakhin (Shukshin) and his fellow soldiers stop at an old peasant woman's hut to ask for a pail and a bit of salt to boil their crayfish. She refuses, then turns on them: how dare they retreat, who will defend the people from the Germans. She has three sons and a son-in-law at the front; her youngest was killed at Sevastopol. Lopakhin asks her forgiveness and walks off. The film was Shukshin's last role; he died during filming in October 1974..
