BAM Chronicle № 7: The Maximalists/Максималисты (1980)
The sixth installment of Vladlen Troshkin's Film Chronicle of BAM captures the project's symbolic climax: the driving of the silver spike joining the eastern and western sections of the line. It was a moment staged for history — officials in fur hats, cameras rolling, hammers raised. What the ceremony obscured was as telling as what it showed. Construction had taken over twelve years through permafrost and mountain ranges, drawing young workers from every Soviet republic.
