Monumental Paintings
In a series of monumental canvases from the mid-1980s, Ilya Glazunov assembled sweeping visions of Russian history, bringing together saints, rulers, and ordinary figures within densely layered compositions. He often supplied numbered “keys” identifying the many figures, inviting viewers to read the paintings as historical texts rather than simply images. Works such as Eternal Russia and The Mystery of the 20th Century present the past as a continuous, contested presence, asserting cultural endurance through scale, symbolism, and careful orchestration of memory.
