Description: Garage used the absurd struggle over parking spaces in a cooperative garage to expose the selfishness, hypocrisy, and quiet cruelty hidden beneath late Soviet ideals of collective equality. Directed by Eldar Riazanov and loosely inspired by an actual meeting Riazanov attended, the film trapped its characters in a single room where supposedly cultured, progressive citizens quickly abandoned solidarity once their own privileges were threatened. By the late 1970s, audiences readily recognized the world of informal influence, bureaucratic maneuvering, and everyday moral compromise that the comedy mercilessly satirized.
