Leisure Time and Fashion (1981)

Description: This late Soviet documentary explored the growing importance of fashion, cosmetics, and personal appearance among young urban women in the early 1980s. While presenting consumer culture and leisure as signs of socialist prosperity, the film also revealed official anxieties about vanity, individualism, and Western influence. The tension between enjoyment and moral supervision reflected a broader contradiction of the late Soviet consumer economy: citizens were increasingly encouraged to pursue comfort and style, but only within carefully defined ideological limits.
