Sheremet’evo-2

Sheremet’evo-2 (1990)

Iurii Kuzmenko, dir., Sheremetyevo-2, Odessa Film Studio / FB-33, 1990.

Description: Kuzmenko's 1990 film follows Igor, a successful cooperator exporting scrap metal to the United States, who decides to emigrate when racketeer pressure becomes unbearable. In these two scenes the predicament is laid bare: Igor pays off the gangster who has come to shake him down, then goes to the police, who tell him there is nothing they can do. The cooperative boom's dark twin — protection rackets that made entrepreneurship a condition of constant menace, with no recourse to the state.
