Rock 1987
Aleksei Uchitel's 1987 documentary follows several bands across the threshold between underground and official recognition. This excerpt shows Viktor Tsoi — lead singer of KINO and one of the defining voices of the Leningrad scene — stoking the furnace at his day job in the Kamchatka boiler room on Blokhina Street, then performing on stage at the Fifth Leningrad Rock Club Festival, and relaxing afterward. The boiler room job was a deliberate choice: marginal work that paid little but left time for music. Tsoi died in a road accident in 1990, and Kamchatka has since become a shrine.
