Karabakh Wars Video

These three clips span the visual record of the Karabakh conflict from grassroots mobilization to its human aftermath. Raw newsreel footage from February 1988 captures the mass rallies in Stepanakert and Erevan that opened the crisis, preserving the scale and choreography of the demonstrations before they were edited for broadcast. A Vremya segment from September 1988 shows how central Soviet television framed the September clashes in Stepanakert and Shusha for an all-Union audience. The final excerpt, drawn from the documentary The Mine Field of Perestroika, turns the camera on a single survivor of the Baku violence.
