Volodymyr Ivasyuk's 1970 ballad about a mythical Carpathian flower carried no overt politics, but its Ukrainian-language lyricism and folk roots made it an unofficial anthem of cultural revival, lending its name to the 1989 festival that fused music with nationhood.
