Ukrainian Independence Referendum
Ukraine. Referendum on Independence. 1 December 1991
After the failed August 1991 coup, Ukraine’s parliament proclaimed independence and put it to a referendum. Voters endorsed statehood across regions with different languages and memories, including Crimea and the industrial east. The result gave independence unmatched democratic legitimacy, strengthened Kyiv as the USSR collapsed, and later served as proof of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
